Reframing Aging Through Art: Explore New Age-Positive Illustrations

Articles & Toolkits

What does aging really look like?

If you scroll through mainstream media, the answer is often… limited. Older adults are too frequently depicted through outdated stereotypes—frail, isolated, or disengaged from the world around them. These portrayals don’t reflect reality—and they certainly don’t reflect the vibrant communities we see every day in our Councils on Aging.

On the other end of the spectrum, we’re shown glossy, “perfect” images of aging—silver-haired marathon runners or influencer-style snapshots that can feel just as unrealistic. Sometimes even enhanced by AI, these portrayals create a different kind of pressure: an ideal that’s just as narrow and unrepresentative.

The truth? Aging is not one-size-fits-all.

It’s diverse. It’s dynamic. It’s deeply human.
