⚠️ Scam Alert: Bitcoin Scams Are Targeting Older Adults

Press Releases & Media Advisories Economic Security & Outreach

A big thank you to the Brookline Council on Aging and Brookline Police Department for sharing an important video that helps educate residents about the growing threat of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency scams. These scams often target older adults by creating a sense of urgency, fear, or excitement to convince people to send money that is nearly impossible to recover.

🔍 Watch for these red flags:
✅ Someone claiming to be from the police, government, a utility company, or a bank demanding immediate payment.
✅ Requests to pay using Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or wire transfers.
✅ Threats of arrest, fines, account suspension, or legal action if you don't act quickly.
✅ Calls, texts, or emails asking you to keep the transaction secret.
✅ Instructions to deposit cash into a Bitcoin ATM or cryptocurrency kiosk.

🛡️ Stay Safe:
• Slow down—scammers want you to panic.
• Never send money because of a phone call, text, or email.
• Verify requests by contacting the organization directly using a trusted phone number.
• Talk with a trusted family member, friend, or professional before sending money.
• Remember: Law enforcement agencies will never demand payment over the phone.

💙 Knowledge is one of the best tools we have to prevent fraud. Please take a moment to watch the video and share this information with your senior center, Council on Aging, family members, friends, and neighbors. Together, we can help protect older adults from becoming victims of these costly scams.
