JOB TITLE: OUTREACH PROGRAM ASSISTANT
DEPARTMENT: COUNCIL ON AGING/SENIOR CENTER
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: FULL-TIME
UNION/FLSA: NON-UNION/NON-EXEMPT
The Outreach Program Assistant supports the mission of the Council on Aging by developing and coordinating programs, connecting older adults with vital resources, and serving as a friendly, reliable point of contact both at the Senior Center and in the community. This position combines program planning, community outreach, and direct support to ensure that Pittsfield’s older adults remain informed, engaged, and connected.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Development & Support
- Plan, organize, and implement new and existing Senior Center programs.
- Coordinate logistics including scheduling, set-up, and ensuring programs run smoothly.
- Provide on-site support during programs, including handling emergencies and assisting participants.
- Assist with grant-related programming efforts and engage directly with program participants.
- Lead monthly Brown Bag nutrition program.
- Act as the volunteer coordinator and provide tax work off oversight.
Outreach & Resource Navigation
- Serve as a liaison between the Council on Aging and community agencies, building strong partnerships.
- Provide information and referrals on topics such as insurance, legal services, home care, and other elder services.
- Visit elders in their homes when appropriate to assess needs and connect them with available options.
- Maintain files and records to track outreach and elder support.
Communication & Engagement
- Prepare and distribute the monthly newsletter and promotional materials.
- Assist with publicity, posters, and other outreach efforts to recruit new participants and engage current clients.
- Participate in training under the SHINE Program to enhance knowledge and provide informational assistance to seniors.
General Support
- Supervise the building during assigned times and provide a welcoming environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required to support the mission of the Senior Center.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s Degree in Human Services or related field preferred.
- 3–5 years of relevant experience in community services, senior services, or program coordination.
- Familiarity with the needs and challenges of the senior population; Previous experience working with older adult population strongly preferred.
- Valid driver’s license, class D.
- CPR/First Aid certification highly desirable.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse population
- Strong writing skills and ability to prepare newsletters, reports, and correspondence.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to learn other software as needed.
- Ability to problem-solve, prioritize, and work independently.

This position is based in a dynamic and active municipal building that serves as a hub for senior services and programming. Work is performed both in an office environment and throughout the community. The Outreach Program Assistant regularly interacts with the public, program participants, staff, volunteers, and community agencies.
- The role may require traveling to local residences and community sites to conduct outreach or provide information.
- Work schedule generally follows standard business hours, but occasional evening or weekend assignments may be required to support special programs or events.
- The position involves frequent interruptions, balancing multiple priorities, and providing support in urgent or emergency situations.
- A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation may be required for community-based work.

- Ability to move freely throughout the Senior Center, including climbing stairs and assisting with program set-up.
- Occasionally lift, move, or carry program materials and supplies up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time during program facilitation and outreach activities.
- Comfort engaging with individuals in person, by phone, and electronically for extended periods.
- Ability to enter private homes and community sites that may present varying accessibility challenges.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
HOURS
Monday – Friday, 37.5 hours per week, 8:00AM – 4:00PM
SALARY
Starting rate $22.78 - $24.16 an hour
Annual increases up to $29.72 an hour
