Summary 

The Town of Shrewsbury, a full-service local government driven by high performance and creativity, is seeking a dedicated and organized individual to join our Council on Aging Department as the Food Pantry Coordinator!  The Food Pantry Coordinator is responsible for the daily management and operation of the food pantry, ensuring that the community, especially seniors, has access to food and essential resources. This role involves overseeing food distribution schedules, maintaining inventory, coordinating volunteers, and collaborating with local partners to ensure the pantry’s success. The Coordinator will also work closely with the Shrewsbury Council on Aging to promote pantry programs, organize special events, and provide clients with referrals to additional services.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Pantry Operations Management: Oversee the daily operations of the food pantry, including scheduling food distributions, assisting clients with food selection, and ensuring smooth, efficient service.

  • Inventory Control: Maintain an accurate inventory of food items, including proper storage of perishable and non-perishable goods, and ensure compliance with food safety regulations, including stock rotation and expiration monitoring.

  • Coordination and Collaboration: Collaborate with local farms, food suppliers, and donors to secure fresh produce and essential food supplies. Coordinate deliveries and manage incoming donations.

  • Volunteer Management: Recruit, train, and supervise a team of volunteers, ensuring adherence to food safety protocols and fostering a positive, productive environment.

  • Community Engagement and Outreach: Organize special food drives and community outreach events. Work closely with the Council on Aging to promote pantry programs and seek support for new initiatives.

  • Client Support: Provide excellent customer service during pantry hours, assisting clients with their needs and referring seniors to the Council on Aging for additional resources.

  • Reporting and Confidentiality: Prepare monthly activity reports, track client usage, and maintain client confidentiality.

Requirements:

  • Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework in social services, nonprofit management, or a related field preferred, or any equivalent combination of experience & education. Experience in food pantry management or community service roles is highly desirable.

  • Skills and Knowledge: Knowledge of food safety regulations and best practices. Strong organizational, communication, and multitasking skills are essential. The ability to manage volunteers and foster a collaborative work environment is crucial.

  • Licensing/Certification: Valid Driver’s License required for coordinating deliveries and local errands.

Work Environment:

The Food Pantry Coordinator will work in a pantry setting, which may involve exposure to varying temperatures, especially in storage areas for refrigerated and frozen items. This role requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting food items weighing up to 50 pounds. The environment can be fast-paced, particularly during peak distribution times or special events. Flexibility in hours, including occasional evenings or weekends, may be necessary to accommodate food drives or emergency assistance programs. Interacting with the public, volunteers, and community partners is a key aspect of the role, requiring excellent interpersonal skills and professionalism.
