 POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Council on Aging Director is responsible for developing, planning, organizing, administering, and evaluating all 

programs and services to meet the social, emotional, economic, and health needs of North Reading’s older adult community. The Director will have a track record of expanding participation, support, and opportunities for older adults. They will actively lead day-to-day operations, provide case management, and serve as a trusted advisor to the community as it identifies suitable long-term senior/community center space. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE: 

Oversees daily Senior Center activities, coordinates space needs, and ensures adequate staff coverage between three full-time staff as well as part-time drivers and volunteers. Makes real-time operational decisions to support safe, welcoming and consistent services for older adults. 

Serves as liaison to local schools and youth organizations to build partnerships through community events, mentorship programs, and internship opportunities. 

Coordinates with the Department of Public Works for maintenance of the building. Makes recommendations for building improvements and prepares capital requests, as necessary, and reports any safety concerns. 

Prepares and administers the COA department’s annual budget; serves as a point of contact for donors; supervises accounts payable, payroll, and purchasing for the COA. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE  

Bachelor’s degree in gerontology, health science, social work, social service, or other field (Master’s Degree preferred) and three to five years of experience working with older adults, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience managing a diverse team. Experience with social services case management and advocacy. 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, AND SKILLS 

Abilities: Adaptability and flexibility to work from multiple locations, reconfigure operations seasonally. Ability to work with employees and members of the public in an effective and tactful manner. Ability to communicate persuasively, orally and in writing. Ability to manage multiple tasks in a detailed, accurate and timely manner. 

Skills: Computer skills. Excellent customer relations skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Skills in grant writing and grant management. Good listening skills. Demonstrates strong ethics, inclusivity, and professionalism.
