Part-time Van Driver - Council On Aging

The Weston COA is seeking applications from responsible individuals to drive the COA van 3 days per week, up to 19 hours per week. This is a non-benefited position. Come join a great staff serving a vibrant client base. The driver provides safe transportation to medical appointments, day trips, stores, and social engagements for Weston’s older adults via a 14-passenger wheelchair accessible van and a 5-passenger wheelchair accessible mini-van. The incumbent maintains accurate passenger records and performs daily safety checks and assists clientele with shopping, entering and exiting the vehicle, carrying items and other mobility issues.

 

Requirements: Possession of a valid Massachusetts Class D driver's license; a clean driving record; patience; strong customer service skills; ability to learn the area streets/roads and has the ability to operate wheelchair lift equipment. Prior experience driving a 14-passenger bus preferred. Ability to assist passengers with shopping bags from the vehicle to their front door. Candidates must pass a CORI check. Mandatory training will be scheduled in areas including but not limited to: CPR/First Aid, Accessible Lift Use and Passenger Securement, Defensive Driving, Disability Awareness, and Substance Abuse Training. Hourly rate $26.66.

Full Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Adheres to the driving/bus policy (including seat belt safety) as determined by the COA Director.

Performs and documented daily safety checks on both vehicles, including tires, gas, oil, battery, water, directional signals, seat belts, annual inspection, lift equipment.

Reports deficiencies/problems with vehicle to Transportation Coordinator and DPW mechanics as soon as possible.

Keeps monthly mileage records.

Completes a weekly report on vehicle usage, including number of rides and passengers.

Works with Transportation Coordinator to prepare and review destinations and monthly transportation calendar. 

Maintains the cleanliness of the vehicles.

Locks and secures vehicle at the end of each working day.

Collects passenger donations and vouchers and provides to Transportation Coordinator.

Assists passengers in getting on and off the vehicle by opening the doors and offering physical assistance to any passenger who needs it, noting safe use of canes, walkers, and wheelchairs.

Makes certain that passengers have entered their homes upon drop-off.

Assists with bundles and/or packages as appropriate.

Observes changes in participants and reports to the Transportation Coordinator and/or COA social worker.

Supervises volunteer shoppers. Assists shoppers in the store.

Responsible for orienting substitute drivers with daily assignment.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications 

Valid Massachusetts Class D driver's license, clean driving record, successful CORI check.

Knowledge, Ability and Skills

Knowledge of streets/roads/community, ability to safely operate wheelchair lift equipment. Courteous, patient, and comfortable working with older adults. Ability to understand and follow instructions, communicate using text and email, and operate GPS applications. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues.

The employee is frequently required to speak, hear, sit, stand, walk, and reach. Regularly lifts and/or moves up to twenty (20) pounds.  Employee must be able to enter, exit, and operate both vehicles independently and safely.
